Can You Scatter Ashes at Anfield? Options for Liverpool Fans

For a lifelong Red, Anfield was a second home. So it's natural that many families want their ashes to end up there. This guide explains what Liverpool FC allows, where you can scatter ashes nearby, and other ways to keep them close to the club.

Does Liverpool FC allow ashes to be scattered at Anfield?

No. Liverpool FC's official supporter FAQ says the club does not facilitate the scattering of ashes in or around Anfield Stadium. That covers the pitch, the stands and the area around the ground. Most Premier League clubs have a similar rule now, because ashes can damage modern pitches and clubs receive far more requests than they could accommodate.

Please don't scatter ashes at the ground without the club's agreement. A football ground is private land, and in the UK you need the landowner's permission to scatter ashes on private land.

The memorial garden on 97 Avenue

The club has created a garden in the Main Stand's public area on 97 Avenue. Liverpool FC describes it as a quiet, intimate place for fans to sit and reflect at the home of the club. It's somewhere to visit and remember, not a place to leave ashes.

The Hillsborough Memorial honours the 97 supporters who lost their lives in 1989. The club asks that tributes left at the memorial itself relate to the 97, and welcomes visitors to use the garden and seating nearby to reflect on their own loved ones.

Places to scatter ashes near Anfield

  • Anfield Crematorium. Liverpool City Council runs Anfield Crematorium, close to the ground, and its gardens of remembrance offer scattering by arrangement. See the council's page on cremated remains for current options and fees.
  • Council parks. Stanley Park, between Anfield and Goodison Park, and other city parks are run by the council. Ask Liverpool City Council before scattering ashes in a public park.
  • Somewhere that meant something to them. The pub before the game, the route they walked to the ground, or the pitch where they played Sunday league, always with the landowner's permission.

Keeping them close to the club

Many families choose to keep their loved one at home in something that looks like them. Our Liverpool football urn is hand-crafted from a genuine football in Liverpool colours, with a sealed inner chamber that holds about 3.8 litres, enough for the full ashes of most adults. You can add an engraved display stand with their name or a message, and a display case.

You don't have to choose one or the other. Some families scatter a small portion somewhere meaningful and keep the rest at home in the urn.
