West Ham Memorial Garden: Can You Still Place Ashes at the Boleyn Ground?
For years, Hammers fans laid loved ones to rest at the Boleyn Ground. When the club moved to London Stadium, many families wondered what would happen to the memorial garden, and whether ashes can still be placed there. This guide explains where things stand.
The West Ham Memorial Garden on Green Street
The Memorial Garden sits on the site of the club's former home, the Boleyn Ground on Green Street. It was created by fans in 2001, and over the years many supporters' ashes were scattered or buried there.
After the move to London Stadium, the garden was closed in January 2020 so it could be re-landscaped as part of the redevelopment of the old ground. The club worked with the developer, Barratt London, to keep the two trees and the soil, and to protect the ashes already there. The redesigned garden includes a memorial plaque with the names of supporters remembered there, and a buried capsule of keepsakes.
Can you still scatter ashes there?
No. West Ham's Memorial Garden FAQs say ashes are no longer permitted to be scattered in the area, because they could damage the plants and shrubs that have been carefully placed there. You can still visit the garden to remember someone.
What about London Stadium?
We're not aware of any arrangement for scattering ashes at London Stadium. If you'd like to ask, contact West Ham's supporter services before making plans. A stadium is private land, and in the UK you need the landowner's permission to scatter ashes on private land.
Other places to scatter ashes
- Crematorium gardens of remembrance. Most local crematoria in east London and Essex offer scattering in their gardens by arrangement.
- Parks and open spaces. Ask the local council first. Many have their own rules for scattering ashes in parks.
- Somewhere that meant something to them, such as the pub on Green Street before the game, or their old Sunday league pitch, with the landowner's permission.
Keeping them close to the club
Many families now keep their loved one at home in something that looks like them. Our West Ham football urn is hand-crafted from a genuine football in claret and blue, with a sealed inner chamber that holds about 3.8 litres, enough for the full ashes of most adults. You can add an engraved display stand and a display case.
Some families scatter a small portion somewhere meaningful and keep the rest at home in the urn.
