Cremation Urn FAQ: Buying an Urn for Ashes

Choosing an urn usually happens at one of the hardest times in a family's life. These are the questions families ask us most. If yours isn't here, call Alison directly on 0416 233 596 (from overseas +61 416 233 596). She replies personally.

Choosing an urn

What size urn do I need for an adult?

Most adult cremated remains fit in an urn of around 3 to 4 litres. Each Identity Urns sports ball urn holds approximately 3.8 litres, enough for the full ashes of the vast majority of adults. If you're unsure, your funeral director can tell you the volume of the ashes you've received.

How much does a cremation urn cost?

Our urns start from A$455. Engraving and a clear display case are optional extras, up to A$689 with both. Converting their own ball starts from A$435, and our mini rugby league urns start from A$429.

What makes a personalised urn different?

A personalised urn reflects who they were rather than just holding their ashes. Ours are made from an authentic ball in their team's colours, with optional engraving on the display stand. Browse all urns.

Can you use their own ball instead of a new one?

Yes. Send us their own preloved ball, whether it's the footy they kicked in the backyard or one from their club, and we'll use the same process to turn it into their urn. Own ball urn.

Which sports and teams do you make urns for?

AFL (all 18 clubs), rugby league (every NRL club plus State of Origin), football/soccer, rugby union, basketball and American football. See every team.

How the urn works

How are the ashes kept secure inside?

Each urn has a hardened internal chamber created by our patented resin-fill process, sealed with a fitted bung, built to hold ashes securely and permanently.

Can it be displayed, or does it need to stay packed away?

It's made to be displayed, held, even taken to the game. The sealed chamber keeps the ashes secure however it's kept. A clear display case is available if you'd like extra protection.

Can it be engraved?

Yes. Choose engraving on the display stand at checkout to add their name, dates or a personal message.

Ordering and delivery

How long does it take to make and deliver?

Every urn is hand-made to order in Doonan, Queensland. Express orders are despatched within 2 business days and standard orders within 5. Within Australia, allow a further 1–2 business days (express) or 2–7 business days (standard). Full delivery details.

Do you ship to the UK, USA and New Zealand?

Yes, we ship worldwide. We pay all international duties and taxes, so the price at checkout is the final price, with nothing extra to pay on arrival. International express generally takes around a week after despatch.

What if it arrives damaged?

We'll replace it or refund you, whichever you prefer. Email info@identityurns.com with a photo and we'll sort it out with you directly. Warranty and returns.

Ashes and what to do with them

Can I keep ashes at home in Australia?

Yes. There's no law against keeping cremated ashes at home in Australia, and many families choose to keep them close in an urn on display.

Do you need permission to scatter ashes in Australia?

Rules vary by state and location. On private land you need the landowner's permission, and for parks, beaches, sporting grounds or waterways it's best to check with the local council or land manager first. Read what to do with ashes after cremation in Australia.

Can ashes be divided between family members?

Yes. Many families keep most of the ashes in a main urn and share a small portion. Your funeral director can help divide them, and our 11-inch mini rugby league urns suit families who'd like more than one.

Can I scatter some ashes and keep the rest?

Yes. Many families scatter a portion somewhere meaningful, like a favourite ground or beach, and keep the rest in an urn at home.
